On January 29, close to 50 Cedar Falls community members attended the Imagine College Hill! Kick-Off Event at the UNI CEEE. Following a welcome from Mayor Green, the evening included a slide presentation by the consultant team and several activities to engage participants and promote discussion.

The consultants provided a project overview as well as a visual introduction to several urban design concepts, such as placemaking, urban character, and walkability. The Kick-Off slideshow is available for download now from the Document Library to the right and a video of the presentation is available here:

The team also used several activities to gather input from participants--to help the team start getting to know College Hill and the surrounding neighborhoods and gain an understanding of some of the issues and concerns that the Imagine College Hill Vision Plan will need to address. The activities at the Kick-Off included:

  • a visual preference exercise, in which attendees could "vote" on images of buildings, streetscapes, and parking, to indicate whether they felt the character and scale were appropriate (or inappropriate) for future development in College Hill and nearby neighborhoods;
  • a quick "one word" response about current perceptions of, and future aspirations for, the study area;
  • a survey about when, how, and why individuals spend time on College Hill;
  • a mapping exercise, in which people working together in small groups identified locations on and around College Hill that they like or felt need improvement.

The community input provided at the Kick-Off will be incorporated into the Imagine College Hill! Vision Plan later this spring.
